What is Omeprazole?
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces stomach acid to relieve heartburn and heal acid-related damage.
How it works
It blocks the gastric proton pump (H+/K+ ATPase) on stomach lining cells, sharply decreasing acid production for 24 hours or more.
Common uses
- Frequent heartburn or GERD
- Healing stomach or duodenal ulcers
- Protecting the stomach in people who must take NSAIDs
Monitoring & Safety

- Treatment courses for ulcers often run 4-8 weeks; some patients need longer maintenance.
Drug interactions

- Can increase levels of certain medications like clopidogrel's active metabolite is reduced; discuss alternatives when needed.
