Beta Blockers
Metoprolol
通用名:Metoprolol Tartrate/ Succinate | 常用商品名:Lopressor, Toprol XL
What is Metoprolol?
Metoprolol is a beta blocker that slows heart rate and lowers blood pressure, easing the heart's workload and controlling arrhythmias.
How it works
It blocks beta-1 receptors in the heart, reducing heart rate and contractility. This decreases oxygen demand and stabilizes rhythm.
Common uses
- Hypertension and angina control
- Rate control for atrial fibrillation
- Long-term therapy after heart attack to reduce risk
Monitoring & Safety
- Labs: Blood sugar trends (glucose and hba1c) may be checked because beta blockers can mask low-sugar symptoms.
- Watch for fatigue, cold extremities, or vivid dreams; do not stop suddenly.
Dosing (简要)
- Tartrate is usually taken twice daily; succinate (extended release) is once daily.
- Dose titration every 1-2 weeks based on heart rate, blood pressure, and symptoms.
Drug interactions
- Other rate-slowing drugs (diltiazem, verapamil, digoxin) can cause bradycardia.
- NSAIDs may blunt blood pressure control.
Patient tips
- Check pulse periodically; share low readings (<60 bpm) with your clinician.
- Take with or right after meals to improve absorption.
- If you miss a dose, take it same day unless close to next dose; never double up.
When to contact your doctor
- Fainting, very slow pulse, or new wheezing.
- Worsening chest pain or sudden shortness of breath.
- Noticeable mood changes or depression.
