Losartan

What is Losartan?

Losartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels and helps protect the kidneys in people with diabetes or protein in the urine.

How it works

It blocks angiotensin II from tightening blood vessels and from signaling aldosterone release. This lowers blood pressure, reduces sodium retention, and eases strain on the heart and kidneys.

Common uses

• Primary treatment for hypertension
• Kidney protection in type 2 diabetes with albumin in urine
• Heart failure when ACE inhibitors are not tolerated

Monitoring & Safety

• Labs: Monitor creatinine, egfr, and potassium after starting or increasing the dose.
• Dizziness can occur when standing; rare angioedema is still possible.

Dosing (简要)

• Typical start 25-50 mg once daily; may increase to 100 mg/day split or once daily.
• Consistent daily timing improves blood pressure control.

Drug interactions

• Potassium supplements or spironolactone can raise potassium.
• NSAIDs may blunt blood pressure effect and stress the kidneys.
• Dual RAAS blockade with ACE inhibitors is generally avoided.

Patient tips

• Check home blood pressure a few times per week during titration.
• Keep good hydration during illness to protect kidney function.
• Report muscle weakness or tingling that could suggest high potassium.

• Fainting, severe dizziness, or rapid swelling of face or throat.
• Noticeably reduced urine output or sudden weight gain from fluid.
• Persistent cough or rash after starting the medication.
