Sulfonylureas
Glipizide
通用名:Glipizide | 常用商品名:Glucotrol
What is Glipizide?
Glipizide is a sulfonylurea that stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin, lowering blood sugar in type 2 diabetes.
How it works
It closes ATP-sensitive potassium channels on pancreatic beta cells, triggering insulin release when glucose is present. This reduces fasting and meal-time glucose levels.
Common uses
- Add-on to metformin when extra glucose lowering is needed
- Alternative for patients seeking lower-cost oral options
- Short-term therapy when other agents are being adjusted
Monitoring & Safety
- Labs: Regular glucose checks and hba1c every 3 months. Monitor egfr and creatinine for dose considerations in kidney disease.
- Risk of low blood sugar increases if meals are skipped or doses are high.
Dosing (简要)
- Immediate-release usually before breakfast; extended-release with breakfast.
- Start low (2.5-5 mg) and titrate every 1-2 weeks based on readings and hypoglycemia risk.
Drug interactions
- Alcohol, other diabetes meds, and certain antibiotics can potentiate hypoglycemia.
- Corticosteroids may raise glucose, requiring temporary dose changes.
Patient tips
- Eat consistent meals and carry quick sugar sources.
- If a dose is missed near mealtime, skip rather than double later.
- Track readings in a log or app to share with your care team.
When to contact your doctor
- Repeated low sugars, especially overnight.
- Blurry vision, shaking, or confusion that does not improve with carbs.
- Persistent high sugars despite dose increases.
