Apixaban

What is Apixaban?

Apixaban is a direct oral anticoagulant that helps prevent and treat blood clots without routine INR checks.

How it works

It selectively inhibits factor Xa in the clotting cascade, reducing thrombin generation and fibrin clot formation.

Common uses

• Preventing stroke in non-valvular atrial fibrillation
• Treating DVT or pulmonary embolism and preventing recurrence
• Short-term prevention of clots after certain surgeries

Monitoring & Safety

• Labs: Kidney function (creatinine, egfr) guides dosing, especially in older adults.
• Main risk is bleeding; watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, or dark stools.

• Taken twice daily; dose varies by indication and kidney function.
• Take with or without food; consistency matters more than timing with meals.

Drug interactions

• Strong CYP3A4 or P-gp inhibitors (ketoconazole, clarithromycin) can raise levels.

• Use a soft toothbrush and electric razor to minimize cuts.
