Imaging Findingslug: "bone-scan-hip-prosthesis-loosening" title: "Tracer Uptake Around Hip Prosthesis" modality: "bone-scan" region: "Right hip" appearance: "Three-phase study shows increased blood flow/blood pool and focal periprosthetic uptake along the femoral stem-cement interface." clinical_significance: "Findings suggest aseptic loosening; infection is less likely given the focal pattern but clinical correlation is required." related_terms: [] related_labs: ["creatinine", "sodium"] last_updated: "2025-12-15"
What does the scan show?
Triple-phase bone scan demonstrates hyperemia and focal delayed uptake around the femoral stem of the right hip arthroplasty, most prominent proximally.
Why it matters
Increased periprosthetic uptake with this pattern favors mechanical loosening. Diffuse intense uptake in all three phases would raise more concern for infection.
Recommended next steps
- Correlate with ESR/CRP; if elevated or symptoms concerning, consider labeled WBC scan or aspiration to exclude infection.
- Orthopedic consultation for possible revision if pain and functional limitation persist.
- Compare with prior bone scan to assess progression.
Patient tips
- Note when pain occurs (startup vs. constant) and share with your surgeon.
- Avoid high-impact activities until cleared; use assistive devices if needed to reduce load.
