Imaging Findingslug: "bone-scan-met-thoracic-spine" title: "Focal Hot Spot in Thoracic Spine" modality: "bone-scan" region: "Thoracic spine" appearance: "Intense focal radiotracer uptake in the T7 vertebral body with no corresponding uptake elsewhere." clinical_significance: "Pattern is most concerning for an osteoblastic metastasis; CT or MRI correlation recommended to confirm and evaluate stability." related_terms: [] related_labs: ["creatinine", "sodium"] last_updated: "2025-12-15"
What does the scan show?
The whole-body bone scintigraphy demonstrates a single, sharply marginated "hot spot" at T7. The remainder of the skeleton shows normal physiologic uptake without other suspicious foci.
Why it matters
A solitary intense focus in the spine in a patient with known malignancy is highly suggestive of metastatic disease. Early detection guides systemic therapy and determines whether additional spine stabilization is needed.
Recommended next steps
- Correlate with CT or MRI of the thoracic spine to confirm lesion morphology and assess for epidural extension.
- Review prior imaging to assess chronicity. If new, classify as progressive disease.
- Discuss with oncology to decide on systemic treatment vs. stereotactic radiation.
Patient tips
- Keep a copy of this report for your oncologist and spine surgeon.
- If you develop new weakness, numbness, or bowel/bladder changes, seek urgent care to rule out cord compression.
